This specific Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera unit arrives in excellent condition, with no appreciable physical wear. A model that, even today, offers RAW image quality that few cameras in its price range can match, though with battery life and focus limitations you need to know about.

Lo bueno
  • CinemaDNG RAW and ProRes recording at 1080p
  • Super 16 sensor with 13 stops of dynamic range
  • Robust build and compact design
  • Very competitive resale price for what it offers
Lo malo
  • No reliable continuous autofocus
  • Limited battery life (about 45-60 min recording)
  • No in-body stabilization
  • Low-resolution touchscreen and no viewfinder

When we talk about the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera (often called the original BMPCC or “the first Pocket”), we refer to a camera that marked a before and after in low-budget video. Launched in 2013, it was the first to offer CinemaDNG RAW recording in a compact body at a price that seemed out of this world at the time. Today, more than a decade later, it remains a valid option for filmmakers who prioritize image quality over any automation.

The unit we have in the workshop responds to the internal identifier 69a1918bbc0862482c1c56c7 and, according to our classification, has received a condition grade of B with lab observations placing it in Excellent condition. It is not a camera for everyone, but for those seeking a pure cinema tool, this specific unit is in remarkable condition.

The camera is sold alone, without original accessories. In the second-hand market, the average price over the last 30 days is 554 €, exactly the price at which this unit is offered. It is a fair price for the condition, though you should consider investing in additional batteries and a fast SD card (we recommend at least a UHS-I 95 MB/s for ProRes; for RAW, an external SSD via USB is almost mandatory).

The model in general

The BMPCC mounts a Super 16 sensor measuring 12.48 mm x 7.02 mm (2.88x crop factor relative to full frame) with an effective resolution of 1920x1080. It is not a photo camera, nor does it pretend to be: it is designed exclusively for video. It records in CinemaDNG RAW (3:1 compression or uncompressed) and Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, and Proxy) at 1080p, with speeds up to 30 fps in RAW and 60 fps in ProRes.

The announced dynamic range is 13 stops, a figure that in practice translates into very generous exposure latitude for its price. The Film color profile allows very flexible color correction in post-production.

Focus is completely manual. The camera has spot autofocus (by contrast detection), but it is slow, imprecise, and not suitable for tracking. Anyone buying this camera must know they will work with manual focus lenses, preferably with a mechanical focus ring.

The ergonomics are those of a small brick: 128 mm x 72 mm x 67 mm and 355 g (without battery or lens). The body is made of polycarbonate with carbon fiber reinforcement, and the build conveys solidity. The 3.5-inch touchscreen has a resolution of 320x480 pixels, which today looks very poor, but it is functional for framing and adjusting parameters. It has no electronic viewfinder.

What works

Image quality remains the strong point. CinemaDNG RAW at 1080p offers post-production flexibility that much more modern cameras cannot match in the same price range. The 13 stops of dynamic range allow recovering shadows and highlights naturally, and the Film profile provides an excellent starting point for color grading.

The size and weight are ideal for small rigs, handheld stabilizers, or drones. The camera can be easily mounted on a gimbal and, with a wide-angle lens, delivers very cinematic results.

Connectivity is basic but sufficient: HDMI (mini), USB 2.0, 3.5 mm stereo microphone input, and headphone output. The microphone input has phantom power, something uncommon in this segment.

What weighs with age

The most criticized point of this camera, and rightly so, is the battery life. The LP-E6 battery lasts between 45 and 60 minutes while recording, and less if using the screen at high brightness. It is essential to carry several spares or use an external battery via USB (though the USB 2.0 port limits charging speed).

The screen is another weak point. At 320x480 pixels, it is difficult to judge focus accurately. Many users resort to an external monitor, which adds weight and cost.

The lack of in-body stabilization forces the use of stabilized lenses or working with a tripod/gimbal. It is not a camera for handheld recording without a proper rig.

The autofocus is, as we said, token. It is not suitable for moving video. Anyone coming from a modern Sony or Canon will be disappointed.

Finally, the 2.88x crop factor makes standard photography lenses become very telephoto. A 50 mm lens becomes a 144 mm equivalent. For wide-angle, you need to look for lenses designed for Super 16 sensors or use focal reducers.

Who is this unit for?

This specific unit, in excellent condition, is an opportunity for:

  • Independent filmmakers wanting to dive into the RAW workflow without spending thousands of euros.
  • Film students needing a camera to learn color grading and exposure.
  • Content creators working with controlled lighting and not needing fast AF.
  • Drone users looking for a lightweight camera with good image quality.

It is not recommended for:

  • Wedding or event videographers, where battery life and AF are critical.
  • Content creators shooting “on the go” without time to set up.
  • Those wanting a hybrid photo/video camera.

Verdict

The original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is a specialized tool, not a consumer camera. Its RAW image quality remains impressive for the price, but it demands a manual workflow and an investment in accessories (batteries, monitor, suitable lenses) that many are not willing to take on. This specific unit, in excellent condition and at 554 €, is a sensible purchase for those who know what they are looking for. For the rest, there are more modern and versatile options at a similar price.
