We review a second-hand Canon EOS R5 C with grade B that has passed through our workshop. Discover how this hybrid Canon camera performs in 2026 and whether it's worth it.

Lo bueno
  • Internal 8K RAW and 4K 120fps recording with no time limit
  • Active cooling system that prevents overheating
  • Robust build quality and professional sealing
  • Dual native ISO base for video
Lo malo
  • Very limited battery life in video mode
  • Dual menus (photo/video) that can be confusing
  • High weight for a mirrorless without an integrated grip

The Canon EOS R5 C arrived on the market in 2022 as Canon’s answer to creators needing a single body for professional photo and video. It is not an R5 with video firmware: it is a camera designed from the ground up for hybrid work, with active cooling, unlimited 8K recording, and a menu system that completely separates photo and cinema modes. Today we analyze a specific unit that has passed through our verification workshop, with grade B and a price of €2,644, within the market average for this second-hand model.

This particular unit arrived with its physical condition rated as “Excellent” in our lab. It shows no significant signs of use on the magnesium chassis, the tilting touchscreen has no visible scratches, and the mechanical shutter —although we don’t have the exact count— responds without unusual noises. It is a camera that has had responsible use, likely in a studio or controlled productions, and maintains the solidity we expect from a professional Canon body.

The model in general

The EOS R5 C mounts a 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, the same as the R5, but with a DIGIC X processor and an active cooling system that includes an internal fan. This allows recording 8K RAW at 30fps and 4K at 120fps with no time limit, something the standard R5 cannot offer without risk of overheating. The autofocus system is Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, with 100% frame coverage and detection of people, animals, and vehicles. In video, tracking is fast and reliable, though in low light it can momentarily lose focus.

Ergonomics is a point that divides opinions. The body is larger than a conventional R5 due to the fan and external power connector, but it remains compact for what it offers. The grip is deep and comfortable, although the weight of 770 grams (body only) is noticeable after hours of recording. Buttons are well placed, but the dual menu system (one for photo, one for video) requires an adjustment period. It is not intuitive at first and can be frustrating if you come from a camera with a single menu system.

What works

The undeniable strong point of the R5 C is video quality. Recording 8K RAW internally in a body this size is still impressive in 2026. The Canon Log 3 color profile offers 14 stops of dynamic range, enough for most professional productions. Active cooling works: we have seen in the workshop how this camera can record 8K for over an hour without cuts, something no other fanless mirrorless can match.

In photography, the 45 MP sensor delivers excellent sharpness with RF lenses, and the mechanical shutter reaches 12fps with AF tracking. Build quality is top-notch: the magnesium chassis and dust and moisture sealing make it suitable for outdoor use. The 5.76-million-dot electronic viewfinder is bright and fluid, and the tilting touchscreen allows for tricky framing without effort.

What weighs with age

The main drawback of the R5 C is battery life. The LP-E6NH battery lasts about 220 shots in normal use, but in 4K or 8K video recording it can drain in less than 40 minutes. It is a camera that demands carrying several spare batteries or using external power. In our workshop, we have seen many units arrive with the battery compartment cover somewhat worn precisely due to frequent changes.

Another point to consider is fan noise. Although it is quiet indoors, in very silent environments (like dialogue recording) it can be picked up by sensitive microphones. It is not an insurmountable problem, but audio capture needs planning. Additionally, the dual menu system remains cumbersome: switching from photo to video mode involves waiting a few seconds while the camera restarts the interface, which can cause you to miss spontaneous shots.

Who is this unit for?

This Canon EOS R5 C with grade B is ideal for videographers and hybrid photographers working on productions where video quality is a priority, but who do not want to carry two separate kits. It is also an interesting option for studios needing unlimited 8K RAW and valuing the reliability of a professional body. We do not recommend it for fast-action photography or events where battery life is critical, unless you are willing to carry a battery grip.

The price of €2,644 is within the market average for units in this condition. Considering a new unit costs around €3,800, the savings are significant. The lack of original accessories is not a serious issue, but you should budget for at least one additional battery and a high-speed CFexpress card to take advantage of 8K recording.

Verdict

The Canon EOS R5 C remains an exceptional tool for hybrid creators, and this specific unit, with its excellent physical condition and competitive price, represents a smart purchase for those who need the best of video without sacrificing 45-megapixel photography. It is not perfect: battery life and menu complexity are tolls to be paid. But if your work demands unlimited 8K recording and top-tier image quality, this camera is still hard to beat.
