Sony A7 III
Best entry point into full-frame mirrorless in 2026
The A7 III remains the right answer to the question 'what do I start with in full-frame?' At €950–1,250 used, it's a ceiling almost nobody outgrows.
- 24MP image quality that ages well (BSI-CMOS still competitive)
- Eye-AF for humans and animals updated via firmware
- Dual SD slots
- Huge E-mount ecosystem: plenty of cheap lenses
- Aged joystick and rear dial: many units have play
- Tilt-only screen (not vari-angle): bad for vlogging
- Pre-2020 Sony menu is still a puzzle
Why we’re talking about the A7 III in 2026
Two generations have passed (A7 IV in 2021, A7 V in 2024) and the A7 III is still the best-selling Sony model in our catalog. There’s a reason: the 2018 24MP sensor still delivers the same dynamic range as many newer cameras, and the E-mount ecosystem lets you mount €200 lenses that produce professional results.
What we see in the workshop
We’ve audited 130+ units in the last 12 months. Patterns:
- Joystick: the number one issue. Units with over 80k shutter count often have a loose or broken joystick. Sony repair: €180-220 (body opened). At Camera Market we discount the price when it appears.
- Screen: 2018-2019 units with thousands of live view hours have dead pixels. Verifiable in pre-purchase photos.
- Grip rubber: in hot climate units (Andalusia, southern Italy) the rubber peels off. Rubber replacement: €35.
The sensor and shutter mechanics are surprisingly reliable.
Quick comparison
| A7 III | A7 IV | |
|---|---|---|
| Megapixels | 24 | 33 |
| 4K video | 30p uncropped | 60p cropped |
| AF tracking | Excellent | Better (real-time) |
| Screen | Tilt | Vari-angle |
| Used price | €950-1,250 | €1,700-2,100 |
If you mainly shoot photos, the price delta isn’t worth it.
Verdict
The A7 III remains the best cost/quality/longevity in its segment. The beauty of buying second-hand is finding one with a recent Sony service and mentally discounting the joystick. Under €1,000, there’s no better entry into full-frame.
